Ron and Miriam Heyer, Division of Amphibians and Reptiles, participated in the VI Congresso de Herpetologia in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brasil in July 2013. The Congresso de Herptologia is held every other year. They were both immensely surprised when Ron was selected as one of the three herpetologists for honoraria. Ron is believed to be the first US citizen to receive this honor. The two other honorees were Ulisses Caramaschi and Miguel Trefaut Rodrigues, both outstanding Brasilian herpetologists. The plaque that Ron received at the opening of the Congresso apparently honored him as a Brasilian colleague-- more or less, as the first name on the plaque is the Brasilian name Willian.
