Lynne Parenti and Zeehan Jaafar, Division of Fishes, attended the Asian Fish Biodiversity Conference (AFBC 2014) held in Penang, Malaysia, 11-14 February 2014. The meeting was hosted by the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. Lynne and Zeehan both gave presentations on their research on fishes of Southeast Asia. They spent four days prior to AFBC 2014 with staff and students from the university scouting out field sites and then collecting fishes in coastal stream and mangrove habitats in and around Penang Island and on peninsular Malaysia. They were joined in the field by colleague Tse-Lynn Loh, from the Shedd Aquarium, with whom Zeehan has just published a paper on the detrimental effects on coastal marine life of the haze from burning to clear land for agriculture (see Looking Out Through The Haze). The newly collected specimens are now being processed in the Fish Division; an initial sort has revealed some possible undescribed species as well as species which we do not currently have in the collections.
