Last week, the Smitsonian Instiution Archives (SIA) launched their new website and blog. Together with the National Musuem of Natural History, SIA is one of the driving forces behind the Field Book Project. Over 90% of the field books currently cataloged by the Project come from collections housed at SIA.
For fans of SIA's blog, The Bigger Picture, there is even more good news: The Bigger Picture is now integrated into SIA's website, and searches conducted on the site will also search the full text of blog posts.
Highlights of the new website include
• a new Collections Search feature
• dedicated pages on the history of each Smithsonian museum, research center, as well as resources on the overall history of the Smithsonian including a timeline of major events in Smithsonian history, and historic pictures of the Smithsonian;
• access to over 4,000 Finding Aids
• new online forums for the public to ask reference questions, and get tips on collections care and records management, from Archives staff.
Other exciting features to look for are an online exhibits page, currently containing 15 amazing stories of Smithsonian History, and a page for teachers with k-12 educational materials.
Take a virtual tour of the website on The Bigger Picture blog to learn more.
