Alexander, i don't know what the name of the bat Rafinesque collected in Audubon's house is. I've read several versions of the story including excerpts from Audubon's retelling of it and from biographies on Rafinesque. The more trustworthy sources do not claim Rafinesque definitely discovered a new species, only that he thought he did or that it was very possible he did. None of the sources I've seen name the bat. If you find the answer, feel free to post it here.

I want to know which is the bat species that Rafinesque foun in Audubon's House.

THE BIGGER PICTURE, a blog produced by the Smithsonian Institution Archives, presents an inside look at the Smithsonian’s history and invites readers to explore the role of both formal and informal archives in today’s world.

This Blog brings Archivists, Museum Specialists, and Librarians around the Smithsonian to write about their new collections, current works in progress or whatever catches their eye.

This blog is the combined effort of a biodiversity scientist and informatician (name: Rob Guralnick) and a data curator (name: Andrea Thomer). The idea of the blog is simple: think screwball comedy meets serious thoughts on digitization. Fast-talking high-trousers of His Girl Friday meets Citizen Kane-level seriousness of Media. Or something.
