I get to work with a lot of amazing people at the department of Invertebrate Zoology, from students to "famous" people. I put famous in quotes because renowned scientists are rarely famous in the sense of being widely known by society. They should be, but that is a subject for another, longer post.
One of the most prominent of scientists I have worked with is Nancy Knowlton, the Sant Chair for Marine Science, and her star is shining even brighter. Nancy has just been elected as a new member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The Academy has a membership of about 4000 known for their achievments in the humanities, arts and sciences. And check out the company that Nancy is keeping as she enters the Academy with: Robert De Niro, Sally Field, Paul Theroux, Bruce Springsteen, John Glen, Annie Dillard. . .
In addition to being really smart, Nancy is an amazing communicator of science. I get to see that firsthand as we co-teach a summer course on Marine Biodiversity Inventory Methods, with Chris Meyer, as part of the Indonesia Biodiversity Research Center. Conducting quality science and being an effective communicator of science are both of incredible importance, and it is great to see one of our own recognized for her efforts. Congratulations Nancy!
