Named in honor of Lyman B. Smith, the genus Lymania (Bromeliaceae) consists of nine species native to the Bahian coast of the Brazilian rain forest. Robert W. Read published the new genus in the Journal of the Bromeliad Society 34(5): 213 in 1984 to celebrate Smith's 80^th birthday. Alice Tangerini’s drawing of Lymania alvimii was made from photographs and living specimens in Read's home greenhouse that he collected on a trip to Bahia, Brazil in 1975. This illustration was first published in Harvard Papers in Botany 4(1) in 1999 as part of the festschrift in honor of Lyman B. Smith, edited by Jason R. Grant.
